Shea Charles is linked with a return to Southampton in the January transfer window. However, he is very happy on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.
Southampton will be active in the January transfer window. There are a few areas of need for Russell Martin, as he hopes to steer the Saints clear of relegation.
Southampton are not setting themselves in good stead for Premier League safety. As it stands, they are rock bottom of the Premier League table and they have not played good football this season.
So, if Southampton are to change their fortune, they must change their output. To do this, Russell Martin is better off working with the board to secure some signings in the January transfer window.
One avenue which Southampton might explore is to bring back Shea Charles from his loan spell. The Sheffield Wednesday midfielder (on loan from Southampton) has had an excellent second season in the Championship.
It is not believed that Southampton will bring him back at this stage. However, it is a reality which manager Danny Röhl has expressed a fear for.
That said, Shea Charles has spoken on his thoughts about the loan deal. He didn't have a bad word to say about his time in Sheffield and if anything, he has made the most of the opportunities to develop there.
In his own words, Charles said: "A few people speak to me every now and then, every few games. I’m not quite sure how it all works because this is my first loan in football so the process is new. One hundred per cent (open to staying for full season), it’s started so well so I don’t see any reason to not want to stay."
Needless to say, this won't deter Southampton from their plan. If they wanted to bring him back to the club, they could and would in a heartbeat. However, it is great for the Saints to hear that their 21-year-old midfielder is enjoying his time on loan.
