[Newcastle United](https://cominghomenewcastle.sbnation.com) were left—deservedly—frustrated as they surrendered a late equalizer to draw 1-1 with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park failing once again to climb up the Premier League table.
Marc Guehi, of all players on the pitch, was the one to put the Magpies ahead with an own goal midway through the second half, but Daniel Muñoz’s header deep into stoppage time ensured the hosts escaped with a point.
The result leaves Eddie Howe’s side in 10th place, mired in mediocrity, and with questions about the gaffer’s security at the post and his future within the organization if things don’t improve quickly.
On top of everything, perhaps the most important thing to note about Saturday’s draw was Alexander Isak’s forced substitution after the striker landed awkwardly on his hip following a challenge.
Yes, the injury allowed Callum Wilson to get some more minutes under his belt in his second appearance of the season following Monday’s debut, but that’s all this development had to it—nothing _bueno_.
Bringin Wilson on didn’t help a ton, and that's why Anthony Gordon was shifted to the center of the pitch to act as a makeshift striker, an adjustment that ended up disrupting Newcastle’s flow more than anything and contributed to the Magpies' failure to register a single shot on target in the first half.
Muñoz had a golden opportunity to put the hosts ahead but somehow missed from close range, setting the tone for a scrappy contest and teasing an ominous hint of what was to come.
Newcastle’s breakthrough came in the 53rd minute as Anthony Gordon won a free kick near the Palace box. Gordon fired a cross into the six-yard box and Palace captain Guehi could only deflect the ball into his own net, handing Newcastle the lead against the run of play.
Palace pushed forward in desperation from that moment on, forcing Nick Pope and the Newcastle defense into several key interventions—to no avail.
Muñoz, who had missed chances earlier in the game, finally made amends in the 94th minute. Guehi himself delivered a cross that Muñoz headed into the bottom corner, securing a point for the hosts and adding to Newcastle’s disastrous league campaign.
“We didn’t manage the game well enough in the closing stages,” Howe said after the game. “It’s disappointing because we had control after the goal and should have seen it through.”
As if things weren’t bad enough, Newcastle will host league-leading [Liverpool](https://liverpooloffside.sbnation.com/) on short notice next Wednesday trying to at least not lose by more than three or four goals. Here’s hoping!
