Report: What Paul Mitchell did in the dressing room after Newcastle's draw with Crystal Palace

Newcastle United were held to a hugely disappointing draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

While to suggest Newcastle deserved three points would be being generous as to exactly what happened in the Premier League on Saturday, failing to hold on in the closing stages of the game was bitterly frustrating.

Still, though Nick Pope might have done better for Daniel Munoz’s late equaliser, the goalkeeper was far from the only reason why Eddie Howe’s side did not leave Selhurst Park with all three points.

Newcastle did not have a shot on target against a struggling Eagles team and scored only through an own goal from former transfer target Marc Guehi, albeit after a well-worked set-piece.

Still, they lacked bite throughout the contest and there appeared to have been little in the way of a reaction following Monday’s defeat to West Ham.

With Liverpool coming to St James’ Park on Wednesday before a difficult looking trip to Brentford next weekend, the pressure is on the Newcastle United manager to turn things around.

According to The Chronicle, Mitchell and performance director James Bunce made their way to the dressing room after the game to sympathise with Howe’s side for failing to see the game out.

Paul Mitchell is impressed with Eddie Howe at Newcastle

Despite so much talk about their relationship, Mitchell has recently been full of praise for Howe and his style of play.

Still, the sporting director will no doubt have been concerned about what he saw at Palace. If this was a one-off, it wouldn’t have been so concerning but the attacking malaise has been an issue pretty much all season.

Things need to improve soon.
