'I spoke to him': Oliver Glasner now makes a joke about Marc Guehi after Newcastle drama

Marc Guehi was always likely to be a point of contention during Newcastle’s clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The England defender, of course, was the subject of a number of bids from Newcastle over the course of the summer and was reportedly keen on the idea of a move to St James’ Park.

Still, at Palace he stayed and the defender and has endured a difficult time of things since during a poor season for the Eagles.

With Newcastle in town in the Premier League on Saturday, Guehi’s presence was difficult to ignore even before a ball was kicked.

The defender also almost endured a nightmare against the team who wanted to buy him. Guehi scored a second-half own goal to give Newcastle the lead, though there was little he could have done about it after a well-worked free-kick routine.

However, Guehi would go some way into having the last laugh at Selhurst Park.

So much so that Palace boss Oliver Glasner joked about it after the game.

The Eagles manager jokingly suggested he told Guehi – who has actually scored twice this season while providing one assist – should become a No.10 after he played the cross from which Daniel Munoz scored.

“Yes, I spoke to him, said two goals, one assist, maybe I have to try you as a ten,” he told talkSPORT.

Will Newcastle sign Marc Guehi in January?

That might be difficult, with reports suggesting money is likely to be tight ahead of the January transfer window.

Still, player sales could perhaps provide Howe with funds if necessary and surely few would doubt Newcastle do actually need reinforcement after two transfer windows in which they’ve not really strengthened the squad.

Guehi is out of contract at Palace in the summer of 2026 and will reportedly remain of interest to Newcastle if the south London club lower his asking price to around £50million, having asked for £75million in the summer it seems.
