'Gigantic': Eddie Howe blown away by Newcastle star who played with an injury against Crystal…

Newcastle United left Crystal Palace with only a point on Saturday.

While it would be generous to Newcastle to suggest they deserved all three Premier League points at Selhurst Park, the nature of the game made the 1-1 draw bitterly disappointing.

Palace, of course, will be frustrated they didn’t score more than the one goal from Daniel Munoz in the dying embers of the game after the defender had missed a brilliant chance in the first-half.

Still, Eddie Howe’s side were almost over the line after taking the lead through a Marc Guehi own goal. No matter how disappointing the overall performance was, not hanging on for the final 90 seconds or so is frustrating.

It, however, could have been worse.

Munoz really should have scored before the break after a slick Palace counter, while Dan Burn was vital in the heart of the Newcastle defence, pulling off a brilliant block.

Back in the side following his suspension against West Ham, the defender impressed.

Speaking after the game, the Newcastle United manager even revealed Burn was carrying an injury.

Eddie Howe now confirms Newcastle star played against Crystal Palace while injured

Talking to BBC Sport, Howe hailed Burn for his performance – made all the more impressive following the reveal that he had been nursing an ankle injury throughout.

“Dan has been nursing an ankle problem for the last few weeks,” he said.

“It is a gigantic performance from him, all things considered. I don’t think he deserved that [Crystal Palace] goal today.”

Dan Burn has established himself as one of Eddie Howe’s warriors at Newcastle

Lloyd Kelly did not convince when thrust into the first-team against the Hammers on Monday and the fact Newcastle did not sign Guehi this summer means Burn is the first-choice partner for Fabian Schar, at least until Sven Botman returns from injury.

Though perhaps not the most fashionable name, the defender continues to play a key role for Newcastle under Howe and it’s difficult to see it changing any time soon.

Without him, Saturday’s result could have been an awful lot worse.
