Ruud van Nistelrooy has “one hell of a job” on his hands to turn around Leicester City’s Premier League fortunes, claims Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy.
Foxes’ fan Gary Lineker teed up the analysis for City’s 4-1 defeat at Brentford by quipping that it was a “Ruud awakening” for the club’s new boss who was watching from the stands as the visitors took the lead through Facundo Buonanotte but conceded three before the break and one more afterwards when Kevin Schade completed his hat-trick to add to Yoane Wissa’s opener.
“He was there watching, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and he probably enjoyed the start but he’s got a job on his hands,” said the show’s host.
Murphy agreed, offering: “He’s got one hell of a job and I think the first thing is about trying to build some confidence and get the lads enjoying their football a little bit again and then he’s got to make a decision on the style, because obviously the fans have been a little bit disgruntled with Steve Cooper’s pragmatism. But they can’t play too open because of what happened today."
Murphy pointed to the next set of fixtures which should allow Van Nistelrooy to have a decent run that includes home games against West Ham, Brighton, Wolves and Man City.
“They have got some half decent fixtures coming up where they will feel that they can get something, there’s four home games in the next six is not a bad start for him. I’m excited to see what he can do, I don’t know if you are? You need something to excite you.”
“I am, I am,” responded Lineker, with both fists clenched.
