The real and obvious reason why Lopetegui clearly has a problem with Summerville - view

West Ham United head coach Julen Lopetegui clearly isn’t a fan of Crysencio Summerville, in my opinion.

Julen Lopetegui brought nine new players to West Ham in the summer, and Crysencio Summerville was one of them.

However, it’s widely believed that the 23-year-old former Leeds United winger was a David Sullivan signing.

Summerville turned down moves to Liverpool and Chelsea before moving to the London Stadium, and that in itself shows how talented he is.

He broke his duck for the Hammers in October with a goal against Manchester United.

However, he has failed to properly kick on since then.

And I reckon I know why he is struggling to announce himself as a star on the Premier League stage.

Reason why Julen Lopetegui has a problem with Crysencio Summerville

I just don’t think that Lopetegui rates the Dutchman very highly.

It’s not as simple as that though.

Summerville only got a run in the team after Mohammed Kudus was banned for five games.

And even then, he has often been the one sacrificed early in games by the gaffer when he makes his substitutions.

Summerville was hooked at half-time yesterday, during our 5-2 defeat to Arsenal, despite looking like our brightest attacking player.

I think I know why…

I love the 23-year-old. I’m a big fan of his electric pace and direct running, but he does appear to be extremely lightweight, especially for Premier League football.

In order to hold down a regular place in this West Ham side, I feel like Summerville needs to hit the gym hard.

Summerville stats for West Ham

The pacy winger has played 14 games for the Hammers in all competitions so far this season, for a total of just 636 minutes.

During those outings, Summerville has bagged only one goal and he has failed to register a single assist.

Those numbers are simply not good enough, and perhaps he is too lightweight for the Premier League.

That said, I do feel like he should have been given more regular game-time by Lopetegui at the start of the season.

There is definitely a wonderfully gifted footballer in there somewhere, and I’m convinced he will become a top-class player over the next couple of years.

However, he definitely needs to beef up a bit first.

Crysencio Summerville’s lack of physicality is undoubtedly something that has stopped him getting more starts under Julen Lopetegui this season as far as I’m concerned.

He will definitely need to work on that over the course of the next few months.
