Manchester United fans are fearing the worst after two players were ruled out of their upcoming Premier League clash against Arsenal.
United travel to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night hoping to continue their revival under Ruben Amorim and dent Arsenal’s title challenge.
But Amorim, who was appointed as Erik ten Hag’s replacement last month, will be without two key players in north London.
Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo were walking on a disciplinary tightrope ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Everton on Sunday afternoon.
Both on four yellow cards for the season, they knew any further cautions would result in a one-match suspension and rule them out of the intriguing clash with Arsenal.
After a cagey opening half an hour at Old Trafford, Manchester United took the lead through Marcus Rashford, who also scored in Amorim’s first game in charge against Ipswich Town.
Summer signing Joshua Zirzkee doubled United’s advantage on the stroke of half-time with only his first goal since the opening-day win over Fulham.
Manchester United added a third shortly after the restart – Rashford continuing his revival with his second of the afternoon – while Zirzkee also bagged a second on the hour mark, United 4-0 up and in dreamland under their new manager.
But it was not all going United’s way and Amorim was frustrated to see both Martinez and Mainoo go into the book after half-time, ruling them out against Arsenal.
‘Martinez and Mainoo missing Arsenal after getting booked being 3-0 up is low-key hilarious and extremely dumb,’ one fan wrote on X.
‘Losing those two is such a pain,’ added another, while one said: ‘Now I’m fearing the worst.’
Another Manchester United supporter said: ‘Maybe a bit of awareness needed there from both.
‘We’re 3-0 up, just let a player run past you or find a way to avoid a yellow there rather than bringing them down, really wasn’t needed.’
United’s emphatic victory over Everton sends them into the top-half of the Premier League, though they still have work to do to make up ground on the top-four.
The Red Devils will face an Arsenal side who have recovered well from their recent wobble, winning three games in a row following a run of three matches without a victory.
The Gunners thumped West Ham 5-2 at the London Stadium on Saturday evening, with Bukayo Saka among those hailing the impressive performance.
‘Today was a top performance from us and we scored a lot of goals – we are playing good football right now and we want to continue like this,’ the England star said.
‘We are back to our best form. We look fluid and dynamic we are all enjoying football right now.’
