Aston Villa extended their winless run to eight games in all competitions with a disappointing performance against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Aston Villa were convincingly beaten by a resurgent Chelsea as Unai Emery’s men had no answer to their attacking prowess.
The tone for the game was set when Jaden Philogene was dispossessed deep into his own half, allowing Marc Cucurella to cross for Nicolas Jackson, who converted his chance past Emi Martinez.
Villa continued to look second best in the match as Chelsea dominated in most departments, scoring their second just after the half-hour mark when Cole Palmer teed up Enzo Fernandez.
Although the visitors made many individual errors in the first stanza, they should have scored once or twice as Ollie Watkins spurned two golden opportunities.
The pace of the game slowed down somewhat in the second period but Emery’s side struggled to gain any attacking impetus as Palmer scored a third to put the game to bed.
Here’s how the players rated on another poor afternoon for Villa.

Aston Villa player ratings vs Chelsea
Emi Martinez – 3
Martinez dropped multiple clangers in the first half. He could have arguably done better for Jackson’s goal and was lucky to get away with a gilt-edged error. The 32-year-old was substituted for Robin Olsen at half-time after complaining of discomfort.
MORE VILLA STORIES
Matty Cash – 4
Cash performed well in the Champions League against Juventus but this was another poor outing for the right-back, who was run ragged down the left by Jadon Sancho and Cucurella.
Ezri Konsa – 5
Villa fans would have been pleased to see Ezri Konsa start however, like many of his teammates, the Englishman was guilty of making multiple errors and didn’t look as solid.
Pau Torres – 5.5
Villa’s defensive partnership of Torres and Konsa wasn’t helped by the lack of protection in front. The Spaniard was solid as usual in position, although his physicality was often put to the test against Jackson.
Lucas Digne – 5
Ineffective in both phases of the game. The Frenchman rarely had a chance to get forward and put some teasing crosses into the box. He also lacked the tools to deal with Pedro Neto.
Boubacar Kamara – 6
Starting his first Premier League match since February, Kamara offered a rare bit of class for Villa in midfield but often struggled to meet the intensity of the game.
Youri Tielemans – 5
Tielemans struggles in a double pivot, especially against an attacking team like Chelsea. This was evident throughout, as he failed to match the intensity and physicality required.
Jaden Philogene – 2
Philogene was off the pace against Chelsea. Starting only his second Premier League game, the 22-year-old was poor throughout and was even booked for simulation.
Morgan Rogers – 4
After Villa fans were critical of Rogers against Juventus, his recent poor run of form continued in this contest, as he produced another hugely frustrating performance.
Rogers lacked any real aggression, pace or invention with his attacking play, leaving supporters angered once more.
John McGinn – 4
McGinn is one of several Villa players who has been off the pace in recent weeks, including against Chelsea, with the Scotsman rarely leading by example. The Scotsman is normally at the hub of their attacking work but today, he was non-existent.
Ollie Watkins – 7
A shining light for Villa on a very tough afternoon. Although he spurned two great chances to score, he led the line well and was a constant threat.
Substitutes
Robin Olsen – 5
Couldn’t do much to avoid Palmer’s excellent strike and made a decent stop to prevent them from scoring a fourth.
Jhon Duran – 6
Duran added some much-needed physicality to Villa’s attack and produced a fine save from Sanchez.
Ross Barkley – 5
Replaced Kamara on the hour mark and didn’t get into the game in truth.
Leon Bailey – 4
Came on Philogene in the second half and was non-existent again.
Emi Buendia – N/A
