The Portuguese international explained that it was a miscommunication between referee Peter Bankes and himself in the opening minute of yesterday’s game that led to the defender’s yellow card.
Semedo believed Bankes had given a goal-kick following Toti’s challenge on Evanilson rather than a penalty after just 57 seconds.
The 31-year-old applauded the decision, not knowing a penalty had been awarded, a gesture Bankes took exception to.
“I’m really mad the referee gave me the booking,” said a frustrated Semedo.
“I saw the referee gesture (following Toti’s challenge) and I thought he was giving the goal-kick.
“Then suddenly he shows me the yellow card and he didn’t even let me try to explain to him.
“I knew I couldn’t reverse the yellow card, but I wanted to tell him why I was applauding.
“I wanted to tell him I wasn’t clapping (sarcastically) because he gave the penalty, it’s just because I thought it was a goal-kick, that’s why.
“I’m not that kind of player, especially on four yellow cards.”
Semedo will now miss the clash at Goodison Park with Matt Doherty primed to replace Semedo, although Pedro Lima could be an option having recently returned from injury.
