Aston Villa can have no complaints about conceding an indirect free kick in the box against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, according to Keith Hackett.
Unai Emery’s team took on the Blues on 1 December in the Premier League, losing 3-0 with goals from Nicolas Jackson, Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer.
In the opening 45 minutes, the hosts were awarded a free kick inside the Lions’ penalty area after an apparent miscommunication between Pau Torres and Emi Martinez led to the goalkeeper picking up the ball after the centre-back had controlled it.
The Villans were penalised as the Argentine was deemed to have handled a direct pass.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, former PGMOL chief Hackett said: “The ball has been deliberately kicked to the goalkeeper by a team-mate. Clearly, in the incident, the defender taps the ball with his feet, controlling it, and the goalkeeper picks it up.
“Referee Stuart Attwell correctly awarded the indirect free kick.”

From a defensive point of view, the paring of Ezri Konsa and Torres wasn’t able to keep the Chelsea attack at bay, with Nicolas Jackson leading the charge.
Martinez is usually a reliable figure for the Villans, and his heroics against Juventus in the 0-0 draw in the Champions League showcased his quality.
The World Cup winner looked overwhelmed at Stamford Bridge and made quite a few errors as he conceded two goals before being substituted at half-time.
In the attack, Ollie Watkins continued his goalscoring drought, and the early season magic that Jhon Duran managed to produce off the bench has disappeared as well.
