Chelsea fans are worried about Wesley Fofana after the centre-back picked up a knock in the side's 3-0 win over Aston Villa. The two sides faced off at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday, December 1.
The Blues secured their seventh league win of the season with a decent performance against Unai Emery's Aston Villa. Goals from Nicolas Jackson (7'), Enzo Fernandez (36'), and Cole Palmer (83') were enough to give Enzo Maresca's side maximum points in the clash.
However, the manager was forced to substitute Fofana in the 60th minute after the Frenchman picked up a knock, with Benoit Badiashile replacing him. The 23-year-old looked to have pulled his hamstring as he left the pitch in pain.
Fofana missed the entire 2023-24 season after suffering a cruciate ligament tear during pre-season. He returned to the team this campaign and has been a key player in the heart of Chelsea's defense this season.
Fofana has been deployed only in league games this season as part of a precautionary move due to his injury history. He has formed a good partnership with Levi Colwill, missing only one league game this season due to a suspension.
Fans took to X to share their concerns about the Frenchman after he was subbed off against Aston Villa.
One fan posted:
"I just hope we don't sacrifice Fofana for this win. He was just starting to look his old self again."
"Praying that fofana injury isn’t bad we can’t lose him," a second fan wrote.
"Super performance today, hopefully Fofana won’t be out for long," a third fan tweeted.
"Finally just hope Fofana’s injury ain’t serious," another fan said.
"I hope fofana is alright," another fan added.
"I really hope fofana and james get better, yet another fan commenetd.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca provides update on Wesley Fofana's injury
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Wesley Fofana suffered a hamstring against Aston Villa and could be out for the rest of the year.
Speaking after the match, Maresca stated (as quoted by Ben Jacobs on X):
"It's bad news. He has a muscular problem. It looks like it's his hamstring. These [injuries] usually require at least three, four or five weeks out... It's a big loss."
Fofana's injury is another massive blow for the Blues who also have captain Reece James on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. The former Leicester City defender is set to miss Chelsea's December league games against Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford, Everton, Fulham, and Ipswich Town.
