Unai Emery gives blunt one-word answer about what went wrong for Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery had a one-word response when asked what went wrong in his side's 3-0 loss to Chelsea.

Goals from Nicolas Jackson, Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer extended Villa's winless run to eight across all competitions.

It was an uncharacteristically limp display from Villa, who struggled to break through Chelsea's press.

When asked why his side weren't at the races, Emery was blunt: "Chelsea."

When asked to elaborate, Emery repeated himself.

However, the Spaniard was more willing to elaborate when quizzed on his team's attacking frailties of late.

The blank against Chelsea marked the fourth time in Villa's last five games they had failed to score.

"They were more or less in the high press, going man-to-man," Emery said.

"We knew before, one option was like that and we had our chances. We didn't score, but I'm worried if we are not creating chances. Today we created.

"Of course, in 90 minutes here, if you are not scoring, they are controlling more-or-less the match. They had a whole feeling, strong and comfortable, they could score like they did.

"We had to accept it because it's Chelsea and we have to keep going, trying to keep balance."

Aside from the worrying result, which dropped Villa to 12th in the table, Emery may have a big injury issue on his hands.

Superstar goalkeeper Emi Martinez was taken off at half-time and was replaced by Robin Olsen.

Martinez required some medical attention towards the end of the first half, as Villa's physios looked to work on his hand.

Emery confirmed that was indeed the injury suffered by Martinez, but could not offer much more detail.

"I don't know now exactly," Emery said.

"It is his hand. We have to check him."

Emery won't have to wait long to get another chance at snapping Villa's winless run as the Midlands side hosts Brentford on Wednesday.

The Bees, who sit eighth on the table, go into the clash riding high after a 4-1 thrashing of Leicester City on Saturday.
