Barcelona lost to Las Palmas yesterday, meaning that with two games in hand - Real Madrid had a huge opportunity to climb to the top of the table despite being in somewhat of a crisis according to the media. Raúl Asencio continued his run at centre-back, with Fran García getting the nod on the left. Dani Ceballos was the only other fresh inclusion. Castilla graduate Borja Mayoral was out for the visitors, meaning that Castilla graduate Álvaro Rodríguez Álvaro Daniel Rodríguez would get a chance against his former side. Lucas Vázquez captained the team today.
It was all or nothing for Real Madrid today, who had been handed the chance to redeem something towards the end of the calendar year, and Rodrygo Goes could have had a penalty after going on the early attack, but the call was denied. Los Blancos did have a penalty after another foul in the box, and Jude Bellingham made no mistake in scoring the first goal. The Englishman then turned into the provider as he fed Kylian Mbappé on the edge of the box to make it two. Half-time, 2-0 and coasting for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid almost had a third penalty minutes into the second-half, but VAR correctly reversed that decision just as the ball was being placed on the spot. Christantus Uche then hit the post for Getafe in what was their best chance of the game so far. Fede Valverde forced a save from the keeper as Madrid began searching for more. Kylian Mbappé then should have secured more, but after beating the keeper - the Frenchman somehow missed the gaping target left in front of him... Getafe then hit the bar in another opportunity to punish the home side’s sloppy finishing. No further goals would be scored from either team, however - as the game finished 2-0 to Madrid. Real Madrid are now one game away from being the league leaders once more... Thoughts?
