James Tarkowski looked “90 years old” when attempted to defend as Everton lost 4-0 to Manchester United on Sunday, Dean Ashton has said.
Sean Dyche’s side were humbled at Old Trafford on 1 December, and despite a bright start against the Red Devils, braces from Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee quickly put the game to bed.
The Toffees conceded three or more goals in the Premier League for the fifth side this season, seeing them remain just two points above the relegation zone after 13 matches.
Speaking live via Sky Sports [1 December, 2:51pm], Ashton said: “Amad Diallo is completely free, who runs into the penalty area, and James Tarkowski looks about 90 years old.
“He lets Rashford run past him. He has him there but just lets him run across. Rashford just runs in, Diallo with a little side-foot down the side of Mykolenko and Rashford puts it under Pickford.
MORE TOFFEES STORIES
“All four goals defensively have been abysmal. It’s actually Tarkowski who makes the mistake, not Branthwaite, and it’s just so easy for Man United.”

The entire Toffees defence has found it extremely difficult this season, especially after such a watertight 2023/24 campaign, with only Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal conceding fewer league goals.
However, something has clearly shifted on Merseyside, with Dyche’s side only two points above 18th-place Wolves and 19th-place Ipswich Town after 13 matches.
Of course, Branthwaite’s absence for much of the season so far has been little help, and since he returned from injury, well-earned clean sheets against West Ham and Brentford are no coincidence.

Despite this, the Toffees’ problems are much bigger than just one player and it seems unfair to lay the entire burden on Tarkowski, but he was pretty awful against Ruben Amorim’s attack.
Dyche is, undoubtedly, on the edge of being sacked right now, and rightly so. He has achieved a lot at Goodison Park but his reputation cannot be enough to keep him in the job.
In other Everton news, Sean Dyche’s sacking is a no-brainer decision after a 4-0 thrashing by Manchester United.
