Mohamed Salah celebrates after scoring for Liverpool against Manchester City in the Premier League
Liverpool moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League and 11 ahead of Manchester City thanks to their 2-0 win over Pep Guardiola's side. The Reds dominated top-flight champions and earned a deserved lead through Cody Gakpo in the first-half before Mohamed Salah's penalty late on completed the scoring.
Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Gakpo and Salah all came close with the hosts applying heavy pressure on the visitors. However, City came out in the second-half and looked to threaten Liverpool's slender lead until Luis Diaz capitalised on a mistake at the back before he was brought down by Stefan Ortega.
With Arsenal winning 5-2 on Saturday in their local derby with West Ham United, the Gunners became the nearest challengers ahead of one of the biggest meetings between Liverpool and City. Arne Slot's side overcame their toughest test yet in the league and sent a reminder to the doubters of their capabilities - inflicting a fifth defeat in six for City.
