Keith Hackett believes all three penalties given to Bournemouth during their 4-2 win at Wolves were awarded correctly.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee has exclusively given his opinion on those three decisions to Football Insider after Gary O’Neil’s men repeatedly shot themselves in the foot and were penalised by Peter Bankes.

History was made in that game at Molineux on Saturday (30th November) as Bournemouth striker Justin Kluivert became the first player to score a hat-trick of penalties in a Premier League game.

Hackett has now stated that the officiating team did not get anything wrong in giving any of the three penalties won by the Cherries in that match, where Evanilson was felled on each occasion.

Justin Kluivert history as Jose Sa and Toti penalised for Wolves

It took just three minutes for Kluivert to get off the mark with his first penalty, which came after Toti slid in on Evanilson deep on the left of the hosts’ area.

On the award of that first penalty, Hackett said: “It was an amazing start from Bournemouth who go on the attack and the Wolves man Toti fouls his opponent for which referee Bankes correctly awards a penalty kick.”

After Jorgen Strand Larsen headed in an equaliser for the hosts almost immediately, Andoni Iraola’s side re-took the lead with just eight minutes on the clock as Milos Kerkez finished off an excellent team move.

Kluivert then scored his second penalty with less than 20 minutes gone. That came after goalkeeper Jose Sa took his time on the ball inside his own area, and then caught Evanilson after the striker whipped the ball away from his feet.

After a check from VAR, the spot kick was then awarded, with Hackett confirming the decision was the right one by saying: “The goalkeeper of Wolves, in attempting to pass the ball, kicks the back of his opponents leg. *VAR check and referee Bankes is called to the screen. Again, he correctly awards a penalty kick which Bournemouth score.*“

Jose Sa Wolves

Jose Sa had an afternoon to forget in the Wolves goal against Brentford.

Strand Larsen got his second after the break to reduce the deficit to 3-2, only for Kluivert to complete his hat-trick from the spot five minutes later.

Again it was Sa who conceded the penalty on a difficult afternoon for the ‘keeper after challenging Evanilson as the Brazilian looked to pounce on a loose backpass.

Giving his verdict on that decision, Hackett said: “Wolves, when playing the ball out from the back, make a huge mistake with Bournemouth gaining possession. The goalkeeper fouls his opponent and another correct penalty kick was awarded.”

Following the weekend’s results, the Cherries now sit 13th in the Premier League table, comfortably nine points clear of the relegation zone.

Wolves by contrast are 18th, with this latest defeat further piling the pressure on manager Gary O’Neill.
