Jamie Carragher made headlines with his comments

Mo Salah has fired back after Jamie Carragher accused him of being 'selfish' for publicly discussing his Liverpool contract situation.

Salah, 32, irked Carragher last week when he expressed his disappointment by revealing that he hasn't yet been offered a new contract, with his current deal expiring in June 2025. The Egyptian's comments came after scoring two goals in the Reds' 3-2 win away to Southampton last weekend and he continued his good form with a goal and assist in Sunday's seismic 2-0 victory over Manchester City, tightening Liverpool's grip on top spot in the Premier League.

For his efforts, Salah was awarded Man of the Match by Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville. After being handed the award by Sky's Patrick Davison, team-mate Virgil van Dijk quipped: "I'm surprised that Carra didn't give it to you."

In a cheeky response, Salah claimed: "No, he wouldn't. He wouldn't give it to me."

Carragher soon responded on X, posting: "I would've give it to VVD to be fair!" The ex-Liverpool defender wrote the post from the Sky studio at Anfield, where he further discussed Salah's future, as well as that of Van Dijk, who finds himself in the same predicament.

"I have no problem with Salah and Van Dijk. They are two of the greatest for Liverpool," Carragher began. "Liverpool are a club run by data. I'm not saying he shouldn't get a two-year deal or give him big money.

"He's on big money now. The club is not built on giving them what they want. That's where the success of the club has come from. They are ahead of the game. Buying Mo Salah for £40million when no-one else looked at him because they are ahead of the game. Liverpool, keep doing what you are doing. You move the dial for a Salah or Van Dijk."

Mohamed Salah proved his worth to Liverpool against Manchester City

On Monday, the pundit said on Sky's Monday Night Football: "I must say I am very disappointed with Mo Salah. Liverpool have Real Madrid midweek [in the Champions League] and Man City at the weekend. That's the story right now."

Carragher added: "If he keeps putting comments out, his agent puts out cryptic messages, that is selfish. That is thinking about themselves and not the football club."

Salah has since spoken about his future again, saying in the same post-match interview in which he hit back at Carragher: "Honestly, it's in my head. Until now this is the last City game I will play for Liverpool so I was just going to enjoy it. The atmosphere was incredible so I will enjoy every second here. Hopefully we just win the league and will see what will happen."
