'No one has to': Arne Slot explains why he doesn't feel sympathy for Pep Guardiola after beating Man City

Liverpool moved further clear at the top of the Premier League table after beating Manchester City on Sunday.

The Reds have started the season in unbelievable fashion and now boast a nine point lead in this year’s title race.

But it’s no longer City who can claim to be closest to Liverpool in the table. Pep Guardiola and his four-time consecutive champions are now 11 points behind the Reds.

Instead, Arsenal and Chelsea are locked level in second and third, with City two more points – and two further places – behind.

It has been a staggering fall from grace for the Manchester club, and there are now genuine questions over whether they can retain their place in the Premier League’s top four.

Having dished out a sixth loss in seven matches for his opposite number, Arne Slot was asked whether he feels any sympathy towards Guardiola.

Arne Slot not feeling sorry for Pep Guardiola

Guardiola clearly lost his head a little bit on the Anfield touchline during Sunday’s game.

The legendary manager is now in the midst of his worst run ever as a coach.

Guardiola was seen gesturing to the Liverpool fans are they were heard chanting that he was set to be ‘sacked in the morning’ and the Spaniard admitted to being taken by surprise by the songs after the game.

Not used to seeing this bedraggled version of Guardiola, some may have even started to feel sorry for him.

This was the question asked of Slot during his post-match press conference. But in typical no-nonsense style, the Liverpool head coach dismissed the notion.

“You will sympathy or empathy with managers that are in a really bad place. So, they’ve lost many games and they are down near the bottom of the league,” he said. “But Pep has won so many things and he’s shown so many times already, that’s why the league is not decided in November or December.

“No one has to feel sorry for Pep, maybe for other managers but not for Pep. He has won so many things and he will be able to bring City back – and they are actually still near the top of the table – but even more than they are now.”

How bad could it get for Man City?

This truly is now unchartered territory for Guardiola and his Man City team.

No win in seven games is the outright worst sequence for Pep in all of his years as a senior manager.

There were moments when they threatened a little against Liverpool, but in reality they never looked like testing the Reds back line. It could hardly have been more comfortable.

That is a worrying sign, and led Jamie Carragher to question whether City may even struggle to make it into the Champions League next season.

While it may not come to that, they now have a real job on to catch Liverpool in the Premier League this season. After Sunday, it is there for the Reds’ to lose.
