At the start of the season, nobody predicted that Liverpool would be nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table after just 13 games, with many believing it would be a transitional season under the new head coach.
It has certainly been an exceptional start under Arne Slot with the Reds also leading the Champions League table after beating Real Madrid 2-0 in midweek.
Liverpool inflicted further damage on Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday after the Reds dominated City with a goal from Cody Gakpo and a converted penalty from Mohamed Salah secured Liverpool the victory, their sixth win in seven games.
Pep Guardiola's players have struggled in the league this season with losing Rodri while also suffering six defeats in seven matches. Now Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher and Manchester United legend Gary Neville believe the reigning champions could be out of the title race already.
Speaking on Sky Sports post-game, Carragher says he doesn't see City making a comeback, who currently sit fifth in the table. "I don’t see there being any way back for City now," said Carragher.
"He said in midweek about needing to lose so people realize what they have achieved. I think that is hitting home. This season, Manchester City will not win the Premier League."
Neville, who predicted the Reds to come seventh before the season, also reluctantly agreed with his fellow pundit. "A third of the season gone, I feel really uncomfortable saying this Man City team, with this great manager is out of the title race," said Neville. "But something feels wrong at the moment. Arne Slot is in dreamland. It is a tipping point type of day and Liverpool are now big favorites for the title. "
Former City defender Micah Richards also believed it would be difficult for City to claw their way back to the top. "I wouldn’t say it’s the end of an era," said Richards. "It’s a difficult time but they’re going to find a way to get back. Some of the players have let (Guardiola) down today. They’re a shadow of their best."
Liverpool.com says: There is a long way to go in the title race but the current situation points towards the Reds lifting the trophy in May. However, Liverpool will have to be on top-form to prevent the likes of City and Arsenal from pipping the Reds to the post.
