Socceroos Abroad: Irvine continues St Pauli revival, another Premier League start for Burgess

There were some strong performances by Socceroos over the weekend across some of the world's biggest leagues.

A Jackson Irvine-inspired St Pauli moved clear of the Bundesliga relegation zone, Mitch Duke's Machida Zelvia kept themselves in contention for an historic J.League title, Cam Burgess made his sixth consecutive Premier League start for Ipswich Town, while Mohamed Toure and Alexander Robertson scored for their respective teams.

In the Bundesliga, Jackson Irvine (cap #568) played a full game for St Pauli as they beat Holstein Kiel 3-1 on Saturday morning to rise out of the relegation places to 15th. It was St Pauli’s third win of the season, while captain Irvine continues to rank highly among the league's midfielders in several metrics, including assists, chances created, duels won and ball recoveries.

In the English Premier League, while it wasn't the result he wanted, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) played another full game for Ipswich Town - his sixth consecutive top-flight start - in their 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Sunday morning. Burgess put in another solid showing for The Tractor Boys, making four clearances, winning nine duels and even managing three shots.

In J.League, Mitch Duke (cap #559) played from the 63rd minute of Machida Zelvia’s important 1-0 win over Kyoto Sanga on Saturday night. Duke's side are now just three points off first place heading into the final game this weekend, remaining in contention for what would be a fairy-tale title.

In the EFL Championship, Alexander Robertson (cap #630) was the standout in Cardiff City’s 2-2 draw with Coventry City. In his 61 minutes, Robertson picked up an assist and a goal for the visitors as they continued to steer clear of the relegation zone.

In the Danish Superligaen, Mohamed Toure scored Randers’ second in their 2-1 win over Viborg on Monday. Toure now has four goals and three assists this season. The striker played 82 minutes while Paul Izzo started in goal for the side.

Ryan Strain (cap #624) helped keep a clean sheet for Dundee United as they beat St. Mirren 2-0 on Sunday morning in the Scottish Premiership.

In the Indian Super League, Mohun Bagan SG beat Chennaiyin 1-0 on Sunday. Jason Cummings (cap #626) came off the bench in the 77th minute and replaced Jamie Maclaren (cap #584) to score the winner. Dimitri Petratos (cap #593) played 85 minutes.

Craig Goodwin (cap #562) was subbed off in the 14th minute of Al-Wheda’s 1-0 loss to Al-Ahli on Saturday morning in Saudi Pro League.

John Iredale (cap #640) came on in the 85th minute for AaB as they lost 1-0 to Brondby IF in the Danish Superligaen.

In the EFL Championship, Callum Elder (cap #614) was subbed on in the 79th minute for Derby County as they lost 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday on Monday.

Elsewhere in England’s second tier, Harry Souttar (cap #606) was sent off for two first-half yellow cards in Sheffield United’s 1-0 win against Sunderland on Saturday morning. The Blades are now outright top of the Championship table.

In Round 2 of the FA Cup, Keanu Baccus (cap #628) played 53 minutes for Mansfield Town in their 1-0 win over Stevenage.

In Eredivisie, Max Balard played all of NAC Breda’s 1-0 win against Almere City on Sunday.

In the Scottish Premiership, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos (cap #644) played the first half of Motherwell’s 3-0 loss to Hibernian on Sunday morning. Martin Boyle (cap #599) came on in the 82nd minute for Hibs while Lewis Miller (cap #635) played from the 89th minute.

Elsewhere in the competition, Josh Nisbet (cap #642) played a full game for Ross County as they lost 5-0 to Celtic on Sunday morning.

Also Cameron Devlin (cap #625) and Kye Rowles (cap #622) played full games for Hearts as they drew 1-1 with Aberdeen on Monday. Devlin produced a strong midfield performance, completing 87 per cent of his passes and creating three chances.

In Belgium’s First Division A, Aiden O’Neill (cap #629) played a full game for Standard Liege as they drew 1-1 with Sporting Charleroi on Sunday morning.

Further, in Belgium, Jordan Bos (cap #632) was subbed on in the 61st minute of Westerlo's 2-2 draw with Gent on Monday.
