Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon sends strong Liverpool message

Anthony Gordon has called for Newcastle United to 'really go for' Liverpool when the league leaders visit St James' Park.

Newcastle will certainly have to put in a much-improved performance on Wednesday night after picking up just a point from their last two games. The Magpies could only muster a couple of shots on target combined against struggling Crystal Palace and West Ham last week.

Newcastle, in the process, missed out on the chance to move up to third and Gordon admitted the black-and-whites were 'becoming the nearly men a bit too much' before the Scouser turned his attention to the visit of Liverpool.

"We need to start like we always do at St James'," he told NUFC TV. "Put them under pressure, really go for them and maintain the performance."

Liverpool have a strong record at St James' - you have to go back nine years for Newcastle's last win - but Arne Slot has already hailed Eddie Howe as a 'very good manager' and referenced how last season's dramatic victory under predecessor Jurgen Klopp 'shows you how difficult it is' to get a result. Newcastle have defeated Arsenal and Chelsea at St James' this season, and held champions Manchester City to a 1-1 draw, and Gordon has taken heart from those displays.

"The thing is with teams like Liverpool, Arsenal and City is if we do score, if we do go behind, we have got to understand that the game is not over," Gordon added. "You just have to keep going right until the very end because those teams come and come again.

"That's their main strength. They create so many chances but to be fair against Arsenal and City, we did that very well. We conceded early against City and kept going until the end. We scored early against Arsenal and kept going until the end and got two great results so, hopefully, it will be more of the same against Liverpool."
