Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has lavished praise on the Reds following their 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday, December 2. The two teams headed into the Premier League clash at Anfield on contrasting form.
The Merseyside giants went ahead in the 12th minute through Cody Gakpo. Mohamed Salah converted a penalty after the break to secure all three points for the hosts.
Speaking on ESPN FC, Nicol insisted that his former side made City look like a team from the bottom of the league.
“I think it would be easier to say there was not one facet of the game where they were anything other than superb. Other than that one mistake by Van Dijk, which let De Bruyne in, [they did not put a foot wrong]. Going forward, they pressed the life out of City. You always talk about Liverpool teams of the past strangling the life out of the opposition, that’s what they did in the first half [of this game]," said Nicol.
“I don’t remember a game of this size, with two teams going for a title, to be so one-sided in the first half. It wasn’t Man City, this was Liverpool against a team at the bottom of the table. It was so one-sided that it was scary," he added.
Nicol added that fans would have never expected the Reds to be so dominant against Manchester City.
“The fact that it was 1-0, there was no way the second half was going to be the same. But they handled it in a completely different manner. They shut up shop and at no stage did I think that Man City were going to score. They saw it out with composure and in style. I couldn’t have dreamt as a Liverpool fan that they were going to be so dominant,” said Nicol.
Liverpool remain at the top of the Premier League after 13 games, nine points ahead of Arsenal on second.
