The promise Cole Palmer made Morgan Rodgers before Chelsea beat Aston Villa that he delivered on

Chelsea maintained their place in third in the Premier League after what turned out to be a very routine victory at home in the Premier League.

The Blues picked up a 3-0 win over Aston Villa, with Nicolas Jackson, Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer finding the net with a series of very impressive goals.

The England international had actually gone three Premier League games without a goal, however he quickly put that run of form to bed with a sensational strike into the top corner in the second half.

Cole Palmer promised he would win Player of the Match vs Aston Villa

The goal followed a first-half assist for Fernandez, as he continued his personal return to form with a second goal in consecutive games.

It seemed Palmer certainly got the better of a battle that was ongoing between friends off the pitch, with Morgan Rogers unable to get anything going in attack for Villa.

This will not have come as much of a surprise to him though. The Chelsea man shared on his Instagram story that he had made the promise to Rogers in the week leading up to the game that he would finish the 90 minutes with the player of the match trophy, something which did happen.

Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers friendship explained

Palmer and Rogers have been good friends since their time together at Manchester City as part of the academy, with both of them making the move away from the Etihad Stadium in order to recognise their potential.

The Chelsea man’s now iconic ‘cold’ celebration actually originates from the Aston Villa man, although he was happy to let him run with it after the sheer amount of goals he was scoring at Stamford Bridge.

He said: “Yeah, it’s true. Cheeky boy, isn’t he? He’s run with it. I’ll let him have it – he’s scored 40 goals or something stupid so I can’t really argue with that, can I?”

Both have been called up in the last 12 months to the England side, with Palmer actually named England player of the year for 2023 after scoring in the European Championship final.
