Everton will still narrowly avoid being relegated from the Premier League this season, according to Alan Shearer.

The Blues were hammered 4-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday (1 December) and sit 15th in the Premier League, just two points above the relegation zone after 13 matches.

They have a brutal run of fixtures over the festive period that could put them in even more danger, with matches against Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in quick succession.

However, Shearer believes the Toffees will be able to avoid the drop, saying on BBC’s Match of the Day 2 [1 December]: “I do think that they will have enough. They are not going to be judged against Manchester United away.

“They will be looking to that game, Wolves, to Ipswich, to Southampton and all the other teams in and around them.

“Historically, over the years they’ve always just had enough, been slightly better and I do think that will still be the case.”

Everton paying for lack of goals

The Blues have a goalscoring problem and that was highlighted once again against the Red Devils.

Beto was handed a start at Old Trafford ahead of the struggling Dominic Calvert-Lewin but it did not make much difference to the Toffees’ fortunes.

Sean Dyche’s side have failed to score in their last four matches, their last goal coming more than a month ago in the 1-1 draw against Fulham on 26 October, which has only increased the pressure on the former Burnley boss.

That is unlikely to change in a brutal festive period where they face four of the current top five, and the only saving grace may be their solid defensive performances overall, even accounting for the four-goal drubbing at Old Trafford.

However, as Shearer said, the Blues will not be looking towards those games for crucial points in the survival battle – it is in the games against the teams around them where they will be looking to pick them up.

It is imperative that they do so, or they could face starting the new era with a new stadium and new ownership playing in the Championship.

In other Everton news, the legalities around Dyche’s sacking have been revealed with Dan Friedkin set to complete his takeover.
