Rangers being much better in Europe than they are domestically is something Aston Villa should aim to replicate, Gabby Agbonlahor has said.

Speaking on talkSPORT with Ally McCoist (2 December, 7:28am), Agbonlahor bemoaned Villa’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday and their inability to compete across all fronts so far this season.

Philippe Clement’s Gers have also struggled to replicate their European form – such as a 4-1 win in Nice last time out – in the Premiership, sitting 11 points off the top despite Sunday’s 1-0 win at St. Johnstone.

Agbonlahor said: “Ally, let’s just concentrate on Europe like Rangers. Let’s win the big European games.”

Rangers need to recover domestic form despite Agbonlahor verdict

While Agbonlahor would love to see Aston Villa focus their full attention on Europe and ignore their domestic struggles, expectations are very different indeed north of the border at Ibrox.

The Bears may be sat in the top eight of the Europa League’s 32-team league stage and three points off the summit, but Clement is expected to be doing much, much better in the Premiership at the moment.

With his side 11 points away from Celtic at the top of the pile, it’s no wonder Clement is under pressure to turn things around in Govan, having already lost to the Hoops and second-placed Aberdeen this term.

A run deep into the latter stages of the Europa League – as they did in 2022 – would be welcomed at Ibrox, but doing so in tandem with further domestic failings could still result in Clement’s dismissal.

The Belgian has a chance to get one over on Celtic in 15 December’s Scottish League Cup Final, but their Premiership progress remains the be-all and end-all for an expectant Light Blues faithful.
