'Brilliant': Troy Deeney says one Liverpool player produced a 'masterclass' vs Man City yesterday

Liverpool produced one of their best results of the season after beating Manchester City 2-0 at home in the Premier League.

The result took the Reds 11 points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side in the standings with Liverpool now a full nine points ahead of second-place Arsenal, with Arne Slot’s side looking like nailed-on favourites to win the Premier League this season.

With Michael Owen saying Liverpool could only throw away the title through two different means, the Anfield side are in an incredible position to go all the way this season and to bring the Premier League back to Merseyside for the first time since 2020.

And Troy Deeney was blown away by one Liverpool player’s performance against City.

Virgil van Dijk lauded after ‘brilliant’ Liverpool performance vs Manchester City

Writing for BBC Sport, the former Watford captain hailed Virgil van Dijk after the Liverpool defender’s ‘masterclass’ against City, with the 33-year-old centre-back keeping Erling Haaland quiet in what was another game to forget for the Norwegian superstar.

With Jamie Carragher saying Van Dijk’s performance was better than Mohamed Salah’s, the Dutch international showed once again why he is still one of the best defenders on the planet and a key reason behind Liverpool’s form this season.

And Deeney’s thoughts on Van Dijk are of a similar vein, with the pundit hailing the former Southampton star and highlighting how the defender’s form has been important to Liverpool’s incredible success this season under Slot.

Deeney wrote: “Composed, solid and brilliant – Van Dijk produced another masterclass as Liverpool registered their sixth clean sheet of the season. He’s a huge part of the reason they have only conceded eight league goals so far.”

Liverpool need to hand Van Dijk a new contract as soon as possible

Van Dijk is one of three superstar players at Liverpool who could leave for nothing at the end of this season, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Salah in the same boat as the Anfield captain heading into 2025.

However, with Liverpool sources confident Van Dijk will sign a new contract and talks ongoing between the two parties, there’s a real chance that the Reds could announce fresh terms for their star captain before the end of the year.

And with Liverpool the in-form team in Europe under Slot, there will be extra incentive for Van Dijk to commit his future to the Reds with the Anfield side heading in the right direction, with silverware seemingly guaranteed this campaign.
