Alan Pardew was “hurting” after hearing the 5-2 scoreline between West Ham United and Arsenal in the Premier League.

The former Hammers boss was speaking on talkSPORT [1 December] and expressed his disappointment as Julen Lopetegui’s team conceded five goals in the first half at the London Stadium on 30 November.

Mikel Arteta’s team found the back of the net four times in 35 minutes before the Irons tried a comeback with two goals of their own, but Bukayo Saka beat Lukasz Fabianski from the spot just before the break as it ended 5-2.

Pardew conveyed his sorrow after the match and gave his verdict on relegation fears, saying: “It was hurting to hear that scoreline. And that stadium, I know what they’re like, West Ham fans, that has not gone down well.

“I think this season has been a real catalogue of, ‘What have we got here?’, ‘What sort of team are we?’. And I think that question mark still hangs over him.

“They’re just outside that six-team portfolio I put together of teams I think are going to get relegated. I got West Ham just out of that because I think they’ve got far too much quality in their group. But the manager, for whatever reason, can’t seem to get consistency out of them.”

The Hammers have been embarrassing for most of the season and once again showcased their fragility as they took on Arsenal.

Lopetegui has failed to bring the best out of the players at his disposal, with the East London outfit sitting 14th in the Premier League table.

The Irons were all over the place against the Gunners as they conceded sloppy goals, and despite Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Emerson Palmieri’s strikes, hope among the London Stadium faithful didn’t last long as they went in and out of the venue.

Lopetegui has no one but himself to blame for how West Ham have performed in the current campaign, winning just four matches in the English top flight.

The Spanish manager was handed several quality signings in the previous transfer window, with the likes of Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo, Guido Rodriguez and Crysencio Summerville making their way to East London.

Most of the new additions, along with those who previously were instrumental under David Moyes, have struggled to put in the displays that are expected of them.

When Lopetegui came in this summer, the Irons’ faithful had high hopes of watching their team play more dominant football.

Pardew has reflected the feelings of many of the Hammers’ fans, but relegation could be a possibility if things don’t improve under the former Wolves manager’s watch.
