Ray Parlour believes Michael Carrick still has “unfinished business” at Middlesbrough before he starts to consider a move to a Premier League side such as West Ham.
Julen Lopetegui’s job has been under plenty of scrutiny since the start of the season due to their poor form across all competitions, with managers such as Edin Terzic and Carrick linked with a London Stadium switch.
Tony Cascarino previously suggested Carrick could be an option for West Ham, despite having never previously managed in the Premier League.
However, asked about Carrick in an interview with Football League World [2 December] with regards to the Irons job, Parlour shared his thoughts on where the Englishman’s future should lie.
“I still think Michael Carrick needs to continue to impress in the Championship before he can be considered for a Premier League job,” he said.

“There have been ups and downs over the past few seasons, but Carrick seems to have a team that can compete in the top six of the league this season. I think he has unfinished business this season and will want to aim to get Boro promoted.
“But if he continues to impress, then a Premier League job can come his way soon.”
West Ham need to find a suitable replacement for Julen Lopetegui
West Ham have massively underperformed across all competitions this season and it’s felt like a bit of a surprise to see the Spaniard still being kept in his role.
There have been times this season when all fans have wanted is to see the back of the former Wolves boss but instead, David Sullivan has stuck by his guns and kept him in his role.
While they may not be directly involved in the relegation battle just yet, if some of the lower teams in the league manage to pull a string of results together, they’ll be more than involved in the fight.

The Hammers currently sit 14th in the league and, as previously mentioned, Terzic and Carrick have been linked with taking over the West Ham hot seat. Sullivan can’t jump into a replacement too quickly as their season can’t afford any further downturn in form.
Only time will tell what the future holds for the team but, unless things turn around soon, it’s hard to see how they’ll finish in the European places this term.
