Man Utd hit with Bruno Fernandes injury scare to add to double blow for Arsenal clash

Bruno Fernandes rarely misses games through injury

Manchester United could be without captain Bruno Fernandes for Wednesday's trip to Arsenal after he limped off during their resounding 4-0 victory over Everton.

Fernandes, 30, provided the assists for United's first two goals on Sunday before being subbed in the 66th minute. The Portuguese was then seen wearing an ice pack on his left ankle before walking down the tunnel after the final whistle only wearing one boot.

New manager Ruben Amorim will be hoping that Fernandes' injury isn't serious, with two starters already suspended for the Arsenal match. Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and centre-back Lisandro Martinez each picked up their fifth yellow card of the season against Everton, resulting in a one-game suspension.

Their absences mean that Amorim will be forced into making at least two changes when United visit the Emirates and it'll become three if Fernandes doesn't make it. The 30-year-old has remarkably only missed one game through injury since signing for United in January 2020.

Fernandes' assists for Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee's goals helped give Amorim his first Premier League win. The Red Devils moved up to ninth in the table after languishing in the bottom half for most of the campaign.

After Rashford put United 3-0 up in the 46th minute, Amorim made the most of their comfortable advantage by making changes. Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, both candidates to replace Martinez against Arsenal, played more than half an hour while Manuel Ugarte, who'll likely come in for Mainoo, was also given 24 minutes of action.

Mason Mount came on for the closing stages and should Fernandes miss out, the former Chelsea man could slot into his position. The Red Devils haven't beaten Arsenal away from home since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer beat led them to victory in the FA Cup fourth round in January 2019.

For now, though, Amorim is focussed on how performances over results. "In the end, I said this many times, I will be judged about the place that we finish. I know that. Let's focus on the next game and look at the performance," the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss affirmed.

"Sometimes we had like Thursday it was 3-2 [at home to Bodo/Glimt] but I think we deserved more. Today it was 4-0 I think Everton deserved more also. So, let's focus on the performance. Congratulations to the lads. Let's rest and recover and think about Arsenal."
