Supercomputer predicts Liverpool's title chances after statement Man City win

Arne Slot's Liverpool are on course to win the Premier League title in his very first season.

That's Opta's Supercomputer has predicted just how likely they are to lift the crown next year - and it is damning for their nearest rivals.

The Reds moved nine points clear of second place with a convincing 2-0 win over Man City on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah put any contract noise behind him with a goal and an assist to put them 11-points clear of last season's champions.

Remarkably, Liverpool have won 11 of their opening 13 Premier League games this season and are proving to be the team to beat in Europe.

Now, using betting market odds and Opta power rankings, the Supercomputer estimates the result of each fixture (win, lose or draw) before asserting the likelihood of each team finishing in each position.

Using these metrics, the system considers the strength of each team and simulates each fixture thousands of times to see how often each team finishes in each position.

So how did Liverpool fare?

Well, out of the thousands of predicted runs of fixtures, Arne Slot's side were forecast to finish top of the table 83.7 per cent of the time.

By comparison, Arsenal finished top 11.2 per cent of the time and Man City 4.3 per cent of the time.

After 13 games, Liverpool are nine points clear at the top of the Premier League - a tally that will be hard for challengers to overcome, but not impossible.

In 2002/03 Manchester United were nine points off the pace after 14 games, but came back from fifth position to win the league.

The biggest points tally overcome was in 1997/98 when Arsenal won the Premier League despite being 13 points behind the leaders at the midway point in the season (19 games).

Such has been the incredible nature of their season so far, Slot's start to life at Anfield has seen him get the better of his rivals.

So far this season Slot has beaten Erik ten Hag (Man United), Xabi Alonso (Bayer Leverkusen), Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid) and Pep Guardiola (Man City) by a collective score of 11-0.

The omens are good for the Reds and talkSPORT's Adrian Durham believes that Liverpool are firmly in the driving seat.

Durham said: “I personally think that’s the title done.

“It will take a hell of a collapse from Liverpool and somebody else or anybody else winning all of their games for them not to win the title and I just can’t see it happening.

“They’re just too good this season.”

David O’Leary told talkSPORT: “I had Liverpool, Arsenal and City down as the three and we’re all shocked by how City have gone at the moment and if anybody is going to chase Liverpool down now it’s going to be Arsenal.

“I think that’ll be the case but there’s not much margin for error.

“There’s a long way to go and Liverpool can be caught but you can’t give them too much more leeway with the points difference.”

On talkSPORT Breakfast, Ally McCoist said: “By far and away, the best team in Europe right now is Liverpool.”
