Cole Palmer is not getting carried away with Chelsea's start to the season - but his matter-of-fact response left fans in hysterics following the Blues' win over Aston Villa.

Chelsea put in one of their best displays of the season to beat Unai Emery's side 3-0 with relative comfort on Sunday. Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring before Enzo Fernandez doubled the west London side's lead before half time.

Palmer provided the assist for Chelsea's second goal, but got in on the act in emphatic fashion in the second period. The former Manchester City youngster delivered a super, curling effort from the edge of the box to seal three points.

Chelsea now sit third in the table, level on points and goal difference with second-placed Arsenal, albeit nine points behind Liverpool. As a result, the debate of whether Enzo Maresca's side are a player in the title race has got underway after a number of seasons out of contention.

Following the game, Palmer was asked his verdict on Chelsea's presence challenging for the Premier League title. Before the reporter had even finished his question Palmer had pulled his face at the mere suggestion before offering his response.

"Nah, it is too early, man," said Palmer, with his remark prompting response on Match of the Day. BBC presenter Mark Chapman commented: "I loved Cole Palmer's face in that."

Social media response saw no shortage of laughing emojis. "That look at the title contenders question," said one X user, "Palmer is one of a kind."

"But he's right *crying laughter emoji* title talk in December is way too early," said another. "It’s too early man. The face he made. Love him man. Real non PR guy," added another viewer.

Chelsea boss Maresca was non-equivocal in his verdict on any title aspiration. More time is required according to the Italian.

Cole Palmer of Chelsea celebrates his goal against Aston Villa

“No. I’ve said many times I don’t like the pressure. I don’t like to say, ‘Yes, we’re there,’ because we’re not there. Arsenal are ahead of us, City are ahead of us, Liverpool are showing they’re ahead of us. The important thing is that we improve game after game, and then we’ll see.”

"For me, it’s not about points or the table - it’s about the process and the programme,” the Blues coach added. “Arsenal have been together for five years, City for nine. Liverpool are different, but they haven’t made many changes from before. It’s not just about the points on the table; it’s about the time spent together.

"You have to be realistic. You can see the difference between us and the rest at this moment. That doesn’t mean we won’t compete and win games. We will do that until the end. The main focus has to be the feeling that we’re improving game after game."
