Borussia Dortmund have been told to capitalise on the potential of their latest prodigy amid transfer interest from Arsenal and Liverpool.
The Bundesliga giant has become notably adept at nurturing and subsequently profiting from exceptional talent, with English players like Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham having previously thrived at Signal Iduna Park. Both stars have moved on, fetching Dortmund a hefty £161million from deals with Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Jamie Gittens, the 20-year-old sensation, is now predicted to be the next high-value transfer. Former Dortmund youth coach Gary Gordon shared his insights with The i about Gittens' prospects: “He’s in good hands. I worked with Nuri Sahin [Dortmund’s current manager] when he was coming through the youth ranks at the club – he knows what the club is about, he knows how important it is to nurture young players like Jamie.
“He also knows that he needs to make the most of him because these kinds of players don’t hang around for long. It won’t be long before he follows Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham out of the door. But he’s definitely at the right club. And at the right time too.”
Having honed his skills at Reading, Chelsea, and Manchester City academies, Gittens joined Dortmund in 2022. Despite being hampered by injuries early in his time with the German side, his talent remains indisputable, reports the Mirror.
He managed only five goals during his first three seasons in Germany, yet this campaign he's already knocked that record sideways with eight goals, including an audacious strike against Bayern Munich, coupled with four assists. Dortmund boss Sahin was full of praise for the winger for his performance.
He said: "You need 1-on-1 players who have speed. He's maturing in his game. We talk a lot about risk and reward. When do I go into the 1-on-1, when do I prepare for it? When he gets rolling, he's a fantastic player. He's also made huge strides defensively.”
The upswing in Gittens' form has sparked rumours of Premier League interest, with Sky in Germany pointing out potential attention from Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham, and adding that preliminary discussions over a transfer could be underway. The England U21 international remains tied to his current club until summer 2028.
