Arsenal receive controversial Man Utd referee appointment amid VAR concerns

Arsenal's big Premier League clash against Manchester United on Wednesday evening will be officiated by Sam Barrott, who has already courted controversy at the Emirates Stadium this season.

Barrott was the man in the middle for the Gunners' 4-2 Premier League victory over Leicester City earlier in the season. After the match, the referee was criticised for his decision to not award a free kick after Jamie Vardy was allegedly fouled in the build-up to the Gunners' opener.

Then, perhaps more controversially, he chose not to send Riccardo Calafiori for what appeared to be a stonewall second yellow card. It is this decision which led Barrott to miss the following week's action in the Premier League but he has since been reinstated.

The home fans will hope that Barrott does not try to make amends for his leniency earlier this season when in the middle for the clash with United. Arsenal fans are already wary about the VAR appointment for Wednesday's game after Jarred Gillett was named as the lead in Stockley Park.

Gillett has been appointed VAR for Arsenal for the fifth time this season despite Fox Sports commentator Brenton Speed suggesting that he is a Liverpool fan. The Gunners and the Reds are embroiled in the title race again this season with the North London club needing to claw back nine points on the Merseyside club.

The Australian official has not officiated a match involving Liverpool since becoming a referee in England. Wednesday night's clash in the Premier League will kick off at 8:15pm and will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime.
