Ruud van Nistelrooy has joked that he and Jamie Vardy have a "big issue" with the Leicester man breaking his goalscoring record in 2015.

The striker remains at the Leicester City, where the Dutchman has just been named as manager. Vardy, now 37, has enjoyed a stellar career with the Foxes and managed to break the record for scoring in consecutive games in 2015/16, the year Leicester claimed the Premier League title.

Vardy found the net for 11 straight games, breaking the record when he scored in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United. By doing so he broke the record that had been held by Van Nistelrooy, who was prolific during his time at the Red Devils.

The veteran striker is still very much part of the picture at the King Power Stadium and Van Nistelrooy is likely to make use of him in his bid to avoid relegation, only after they've buried the hatchet.

The Dutchman, with a smile, said: “It’s a problem he broke my record, I said to him we have a big issue to get out of the way! At the time I made a tweet about breaking the record and wishing him well. Nine years later it’s weird how these things go, but good stories.

“He is someone who has had a career for a long time and has been performing all these seasons. He still is and he’s a great striker and great to have him in the squad.”

During Vardy's time at Leicester he's twice won promotion to the top flight, won the Premier League and claimed the FA Cup. The striker scored 20 times last year as the Foxes secured their return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

This year he's found the net four times as Leicester look to avoid the drop. They currently sit 16th - one point above the relegation zone. A Vardy goal back in October helped the Foxes secure a come-from-behind victory against Southampton.

Van Nistelrooy has made it clear he will look to win games - not win style points - throughout his time at the King Power. He said: "I’m thinking of one thing before any game I prepare, and that’s winning. When you play top teams in the Premier League, mid-table teams or lower-ranked teams, it sometimes requires a different approach."
