The latest news from Newcastle United as the Magpies prepare to face Premier League rivals Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Newcastle United midfielder Jamie Miley is to visit a specialist as he bids to find a resolution over a back injury that has limited the impact he has made during a loan spell with League Two club Newport County.

The youngster enjoyed a positive pre-season campaign with Eddie Howe’s senior men and earned rave reviews for his performances featuring alongside the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton during preparations for the new Premier League season.

Speaking after Miley impressed in a pre-season win against Champions League qualifiers Girona on the back of friendly appearances against SpVgg Unterhaching, Hull City and Urawa Red Diamonds, Howe said: “We’ll always make an individual decision but certainly he is someone that falls into the category of possibly benefiting from a loan. This pre-season I think we’ve seen a big jump in his level of performance and renewed confidence. He looks good physically so let’s wait and see what happens.”

The 20-year-old joined Newport on a season-long loan within the final days of the summer transfer window but his attempts to make an impact during his time with the EFL club have been hampered by an ongoing back issue. Miley made a belated debut for the Exiles in a 2-0 win at Gillingham in October before going on to appear in League Two games against Fleetwood Town and Tranmere Rovers as well as as FA Cup first round defeat at the hands of League One side Peterborough United. However, the Magpies academy product has not featured in County’s last two games after suffering a bad spasm in the defeat at Tranmere last month and Exiles head coach Nelson Jardim has confirmed Miley has been to see a specialist in a bid to find a resolution to the issue.

Jardim told the South Wales Argus: “Jamie is recovering but he is due to see a specialist and we are not quite sure what point he is at. We expect some news in the coming days but we need to find out what the real problem is. He had to come off at Tranmere because of a bad back spasm, we have tried to look after him to make sure he came back stronger but things haven’t developed the way that the medical department was expecting, so he will be seen by a specialist.”
