Manchester City will face the ‘Class-of-’92’ owned club in the third round.

Manchester City were paired with Salford City in the FA Cup third round draw on Monday, the first time the two clubs have met each other.

The League Two side progressed to the third round after wins over Shrewsbury Town and Cheltenham Town, and it’s the first time Salford have made it to this stage of the tournament. The club, owned by the ‘Class of ‘92’ members Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and David Beckham, only gained promotion to the EFL in 2019 and face City in the most high-profile match in their history.

Reacting to the news, Neville wrote on X: “He’s getting sacked in the morning @SalfordCityFC.” The comment comes after Liverpool fans chanted at Pep Guardiola was ‘getting sacked in the morning’ during Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Anfield, with the Premier League champions without a win in seven games.

City will hope to arrest that slide before then, with eight matches before the FA Cup tie and, with the Blues’ chances of claiming the Premier League title waning by the week, the FA Cup may be a competition Guardiola prioritises this season.

City made it to the final in each of the last two seasons, winning in 2023, one of Guardiola’s two triumphs in the tournament.

Elsewhere in the FA Cup third round draw, Manchester United face a trip to Arsenal, with Aston Villa v West Ham United the only other Premier League pairing.

Everton’s tie against Peterborough United could see Ashley Young face his 18-year-old son Tyler, while National League Tamworth will host Tottenham Hotspur and Stockport County will travel to Crystal Palace.
