Former Real Madrid midfielder Guti recently shared his thoughts on Kylian Mbappe’s role at Real Madrid during an appearance on the football talk show El Chiringuito.
Guti emphasised the importance of Mbappe stepping up as a leader and overcoming any lingering insecurities that might hold him back from fulfilling his potential.
He pointed out that for Mbappe to establish himself as a true leader at Real Madrid, he needs to demonstrate more confidence in critical moments, such as taking penalties.
“Mbappe has to break with this insecurity now… and that is broken with this type of detail (taking a penalty),” he began saying.
The 48-year-old stressed that these moments are not about pressure or obligation but about showcasing the character and drive to lead the team.
By embracing such challenges, Mbappe could solidify his standing as a key figure in the squad and inspire his teammates.

According to Guti, Mbappe’s performance at Real Madrid so far has not met the expectations that come with being one of the best players in the world.
“Mbappe is not singled out at Liverpool for missing a penalty. He is singled out because we all expected more from him.”
While missing a penalty might not seem like a big issue, Guti argued that the disappointment stems from fans and analysts expecting more decisive contributions from the French superstar.
“Taking that penalty makes you stronger… It’s not an obligation. It’s about showing that character of wanting to take on the world,” he explained.
“Mbappe must be a leader,” he said.
As someone who has both played for and coached Real Madrid at different levels, Guti understands the demands placed on players at the club. He believes that Mbappe has all the qualities needed to become the leader Real Madrid fans are yearning for.
