West Ham attacker Maxwel Cornet could have his loan spell at Southampton cut short in January, according to Jack Rosser.

The Sun journalist reported on X (2 December) that having made just two starts since arriving on loan at St. Mary’s in August, Cornet could return to the London Stadium next month.

Southampton are keen on loaning a new left winger in the upcoming transfer window but would need to free up spots to do that.

The Irons are already making plans to send the 28-year-old straight back out on another loan though, having held discussions with overseas clubs regarding a half-season switch for Cornet.

Having failed to make an appearance for the Irons this season before his departure to the south coast on Deadline Day, Cornet will be given the green light to join his third club of the campaign in January.

If the Ivorian is indeed sent back to the London Stadium by Southampton next month, there likely won’t be many plans to re-integrate Cornet into the first-team fold under Julen Lopetegui.

Even before Lopetegui’s arrival in East London, Cornet’s minutes were significantly on the wane, appearing just seven times in the Premier League last season and a further nine in other competitions.

Just three of these 16 appearances were starts, and having featured just four times for the rock-bottom Saints so far this term, it’s clear that he’s also out-of-favour at his new employers.

Teams on the continent and further afar may prove to be better suitors for Cornet going forward, but regardless of how insipid Lopetegui’s side have been this season, he has no future with the Hammers.

In other West Ham news, Lopetegui has been given a boost after one player was made available to face Leicester at the last minute.
