Mo Salah has been snubbed in the nominations for this year's FIFPro World 11, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi both getting in ahead of the Liverpool star.
Salah, 32, has been in blistering form this season, scoring 13 goals and registering 11 assists across 20 appearances - but it counts for nothing in the voting. Over 28,000 footballers from 70 countries around the world cast their votes, selecting three players in each position based on their performances from August, 21 2023 to July, 14 2024.
The Egyptian appears to have have paid the price for his underwhelming end to last term, as Liverpool missed out on winning the Premier League during Jurgen Klopp's final campaign. Arsenal, who also failed to win the title, have seen Bukayo Saka miss out on a nomination.
Ronaldo and Messi's inclusions have sparked backlash given that the legendary duo now play in Saudi Arabia and the USA respectively. The list of forwards also includes Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, England captain Harry Kane, Real Madrid duo Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, Chelsea hotshot Cole Palmer and Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal.
Liverpool get Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold exit verdict as Reds told one star will stay
Liverpool and Arsenal fans will at least be happy to see that respective defenders Virgil van Dijk and William Saliba were nominated. The World 11 will be unveiled next Monday, December 9. The Best FIFA men's and women's player will also be crowned.
Salah again wasn't nominated. The 32-year-old will seemingly stand a much better chance next year, as Liverpool are currently top of both the Premier League and Champions League tables.
Watching a replay of his assist in the Reds' 2-0 victory over City on Sunday, Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville hailed: "This is just world class. That is unbelievable from Mo Salah.
"He looks up, he looks at Akanji, he's nowhere near him he doesn't try to block him, [Stefan] Ortega can't get there, and [Cody] Gakpo in off that left-hand side. Kyle Walker doesn't know that he's there, Cody Gakpo. Vision, precision and brilliance from Salah to spot that pass and make that cross."
