Winger Rangers were 'closing in' on in summer now fending 'enquiries from Barcelona'

Rangers were linked a lengthy list of new players in the summer as Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen oversaw a massive overhaul.

The manager knew that a younger squad was needed to take the club forward, even if it meant short term pain for the Ibrox masses – although few predicted just how painful it would be.

One name that emerged early in the window with Rangers needing an upgrade on the wing was South African wonderkid Relebohile Mofokeng, a player now attracting elite level interest, according to snl24.com.

Relebohile Mofokeng now a target for Barcelona

The 20-year old has six goals and eight assists in 22 games this season after making his breakthrough in 2023.

SNL24, however, have been told that Rangers might already be fighting a losing battle:

“There have been enquiries from Barcelona on Relebohile Mofokeng. The boy has been monitored by the coaches of the Barcelona B team with interest,” a source told the South African news outlet.

“They have been following and made approaches with some of their contacts in the PSL, including certain coaches they know closely, asking about the player.

“He is a player with the potential to play in some of the top leagues in Europe and the feedback has been positive on the enquiries made.”

How close were Rangers to signing Mofokeng?

As early as May, Rangers were said to be “closing in” on Mofokeng and leading the race for his signature.

It was a signing that ticked a lot of boxes; the South Africa international had burst onto the scene but then showed that he was no flash in the pan, he proved that he can handle the big occasion with a cup final winner, Rangers also needed quality wingers who could be developed and sold at a profit.

After missing out on Adama Traore and Yusuf Kabadayi, with both wide men said to be on the verge of signing for Rangers, Mofokeng seemed like only a matter of time.

Now, it looks like time has run out.
