Arsenal loanee claims he’s himself again after 2 goals in 2 games

Fabio Vieira claimed he’s getting back to his true self after scoring his second goal in two games for FC Porto on Monday night, netting against Casa Pia.

Fabio Vieira made another start for Porto in a league game against Casa Pia on Monday, playing a different role to previous fixtures.

Since his loan back to Porto, Vieira has generally featured on the right, as he did in his last season with Arsenal. But the 24-year-old took up a more central position in Monday’s game, and he ended up scoring his second goal in two games to give his team the lead.

Carrying the ball towards the box in the middle of the field, Vieira played a pass out to the right-hand side. The resulting cross was just behind Samu Omorodion, who laid a pass off for Vieira to finish well.

Porto ultimately won the match 2-0, with Vieira playing 79 minutes of the contest and winning the Player of the Match award. Speaking after the game, he suggested he’d reached a turning point in his loan.

“Scoring is always good,” Vieira began. “I always want to give my all. I think I’m getting back to the real Fábio, my intensity, and I hope to continue to evolve to help the team.”

The manager also had praise for Vieira, adding that whilst the player’s talent was never in doubt, there were other issues he had to overcome.

“Fabio has a genius trait that everyone knows about,” Vitor Bruno said. “He has to meet other requirements, due to the time he was out of action and the complicated injury he had. Then he also had a problem (with injury) here at FC Porto.

“This can only be achieved through training, through matches, so that we can see Fabio at his best.”

Bruno was then asked whether Vieira’s comments about being his true self related to the fact he was playing centrally again.

“Maybe that was a message from him to be able to play inside, I don’t know,” Bruno responded. “But Fabio will play where he best serves the team’s interests. There are times when he will play inside, others outside.”

Vieira scored the first goal of his loan against Anderlecht on Thursday, now he already has a second. The player has made plenty of appearances already, but he did need to get going on the goalscoring and assisting fronts. It seems that’s now happening.
