Tony Cottee thinks Sean Dyche is at risk of the sack as Everton must stay in the Premier League ahead of the move to the “fantastic” new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

The Toffees were hammered 4-0 at Manchester United on Sunday (1 December) and are just two points above the relegation zone ahead of a daunting December.

Ex-Everton striker Cottee hailed the “great” job Dyche has done in tricky circumstances but conceded there must be an upturn in results for him to save himself at Goodison.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (3 December, 8:15am) to Jeff Stelling, he said: “I think he’s in trouble Jeff, I like Dychey I think he’s done a great job wherever he’s been, he’s an old team-mate of mine, so I want him to do well.

“But it’s about results, they’ve got to get results. Tough fixtures coming up, really tough fixtures coming up. Of course the takeover as well Jeff, there’s a lot going on at Everton.

“And the bottom line is they have to stay in the Premier League, with that fantastic new stadium coming we can’t have Everton in the Championship for that first season in the new stadium.

“They’ve got to start getting results or unfortunately there’s going to have to be a change and I’m not just talking about Dychey I’m talking about any manager who’s managed a football club, if you don’t get results things have got to change.”

Everton have big Sean Dyche decision to make

After a few years of utter turmoil, there should be a huge sense of optimism around the club right now.

The Friedkin Group takeover is on the cusp of being completed and will, hopefully, begin the process of getting the Toffees back on a much more even financial keel.

And, as Cottee mentions, the move to Bramley-Moore Dock is on the horizon, a move that should yield fantastic financial and commercial benefits in the long run.

But, on the pitch, there is a real sour mood. The United game was poor but it is other results already this season that have been a much bigger concern – particularly the Bournemouth defeat and the Brentford draw.

There’s still a long, long way to go this term, of course, but right now you have to say that Dyche is on extremely thin ice. If things don’t improve, and fast, then the club have a big decision to make.
