Liverpool look likely to spend heavily in the transfer market in 2025.
Having kept their powder dry for the most part in 2024, the Reds are set to need a much bigger year next time around.
While it remains to be seen whether replacements will be sought for Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Liverpool squad will need touching up in some areas regardless.
Although Arne Slot has made fantastic use of the players he inherited from Jurgen Klopp, he is likely to have his own ideas on players who can improve Liverpool.
Last summer, it had looked liked one of those players on Slot’s radar had been RB Leipzig loanee Xavi Simons.
There were claims that Liverpool were ‘extremely keen’ on Simons as he looked for another loan move from PSG. And it sounds as if the Reds interest remains ahead of 2025.

Xavi Simons could end up at Liverpool
Simons was excited to face Liverpool during the Champions League back in October.
After all the transfer links, the 21-year-old had the chance to show the Reds why he would be a good signing for them.

Unfortunately, that didn’t really happen. Liverpool comfortably beat Leipzig, with Simons being taken off with an ankle injury which he is still yet to recover from.
Nevertheless, according to journalist David Ornstein in The Athletic, Liverpool are still right in the mix to sign the Netherlands international in 2025.

“All options are available to Paris Saint-Germain on Xavi Simons,” says Ornstein. “No decisions have been made regarding his future and much can change before the summer.”
After going on to say that a permanent sale from PSG is ‘plausible,’ the well respected reporter names Liverpool as being seen as one of several ‘probable’ destinations for Simons.
“Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern, Liverpool and Real Madrid are seen as the most probable destinations, while Manchester United showed some interest during the previous market,” he says. “PSG view Simons as a golden opportunity either way; they either retain a top talent or trade him at a huge profit. Unless something goes badly wrong, his anticipated transfer fee is €80million [£66m] minimum.”
Harvey Elliott can be Liverpool’s Xavi Simons
While Simons is clearly an exciting player, there will be some difficulty in selling this move to the Liverpool fanbase.
That’s because the Reds already have their very own Xavi Simons and his name is Harvey Elliott.
2020/21 (PSG) 2021/22 (PSG) 2022/23 (PSV Eindhoven) 2023/24 (RB Leipzig) 2024/25 (RB Leipzig) 2022-Present Netherlands
Appearances 2 9 48 43 11 24
Goals 0 0 22 10 3 3
Assists 0 1 11 13 3 3
Simons and Elliott are just a handful of months apart in terms of age, with the Liverpool man being slightly more senior.
Both tricky, small and excellent technically, there really is nothing that Simons can do which Elliott can’t.
With Harvey now back fit and ready to make an impact under Slot, we expect him to show why the Leipzig man is more likely to end up at any of the four clubs Ornstein mentions here.
