Everton must win against Wolves on Wednesday ahead of an “incredible” run of fixtures, Paul Merson has said.

Writing for Sportskeeda (2 November), Merson said that with games against Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City coming up, the 4 December clash at Goodison Park is essentially a cup final.

Sean Dyche’s side suffered a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Manchester United two days ago, but Merson predicts that despite simply having to win against Wolves, the Toffees will lose 2-1.

He said: “This is a must-win game – if they fail to win, they have no chance against Liverpool.

“Starting with the Merseyside derby, Everton have an incredible tough run of fixtures. So this game against Wolves is literally a cup final for them.

“I usually don’t worry about Everton because in the end, they will always find a way to stay safe.

“But Everton are in this battle every season, and that’s a problem because sooner or later, you will go down if you keep putting yourselves in these situations.

“Everton don’t score a lot of goals and Wolves definitely have goals in them. I also expect Wolves to be better away from home, so I’m going with a win for the visitors.”

Wolves defeat an unthinkable prospect for Everton and Sean Dyche

The Toffees are teetering on the edge of a full-blown relegation battle 13 games into the season, sitting just two points above the drop zone despite having a merciful run of fixtures to open the campaign.

That’s merciful when compared to four of their five matches in December, with Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and even an out-of-form Manchester City all salivating at the prospect of facing Dyche’s side.

Beating Wolves, therefore, is shaping up to be arguably the Blues’ biggest fixture of the entire season, and should it go the way Merson predicts, Dyche’s side could be on their way to losing six in a row.

Based on their display at Old Trafford, which saw them ship four avoidable goals and produce very little at the other end, the Toffees are there for the taking with seemingly no way of turning things around.

Dan Friedkin’s takeover is expected to be complete before their horror run of games is over [Alan Myers, 21 November], and depending on how December goes, his first big decision looks likely to concern Dyche’s future.
