Chelsea fans should not be surprised by ‘fantastic’ player’s turn in form under Enzo Maresca – opinion

There is a lot of positivity from Chelsea fans at the moment about the situation they find themselves in roughly a third of the way through the season.

Enzo Maresca has led his side to joint second in the league, and has hit the ground running again with three consecutive wins in all competitions since the international break.

What has been noticeable is the fact that a number of individuals are playing easily their best football since making the move to Stamford Bridge under the new manager.

Moises Caicedo has been arguably the best midfielder in the league this season, while fellow £100m+ man Enzo Fernandez has proven his importance to the side of late after temporarily dropping out of the starting side.

Of all those to show improvement, there has perhaps not been a player who has reached a higher level in comparison to last season than Nicolas Jackson.

Nicolas Jackson on fire for Chelsea this season

The Senegal international sits on eight Premier League goals this season, a figure only topped by Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Chris Wood.

He opened the scoring yet again at the weekend against Aston Villa, with Unai Emery describing Jackson before the game as ‘fantastic’.

One of the most notable things about the striker’s upturn in form is how much more clinical he has become in front of goal.

Jackson’s turn in form not surprising when looking at Villarreal stats

According to WhoScored, the Senegal international has the highest shot conversion rate in the league of any player to take a minimum of 25 shots at goal.

While those who only watched him last season may find this surprising, looking back at his time at Villarreal makes it not so hard to believe.

He achieved an even higher percentage of converting chances when he was breaking through as a striker for the La Liga side, something which no doubt helped him get his move to Chelsea.

Jackson’s form is keeping Christopher Nkunku out of the Premier League side at the moment, and reports are beginning to claim Nkunku is getting frustrated at his minutes.

However, it is hard to make an argument for Jackson to be left out at the moment, and will likely continue in the starting side tomorrow night against Southampton.
