Some big claims have emerged this afternoon regarding Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres and a potential move to Newcastle United in 2025.
According to [FootballTransfers](https://www.footballtransfers.com/en/transfer-news/pt-liga-portugal/2024/12/newcastle-transfer-news-magpies-most-active-in-gyokeres-race), Newcastle have been in contact with the player’s agent in an ambitious bid to bring the Swedish international to St James’ Park next year.
They report that these talks are ongoing and that the free-scoring 26-year-old is ‘very open’ to the move, appreciating the club’s ambition under new ownership and valuing the fact he’d play a prominent role on Tyneside.
It’s thought that Arsenal and Man Utd both hold interest in the striker, with Man City also admirers, but FootballTransfers report that Newcastle are the first club to open discussions with his agent over a potential move.
If true, you have to admire the ambition, with the prospect of Gyokeres and Swedish teammate Alexander Isak in the same attack an exciting one. However, it will take a big effort and a huge transfer fee to land one of the most in-form attackers in Europe so far this season.
There’d also be questions around our ability to have two top quality strikers in the same side. Yes, Callum Wilson is approaching the end of the his contract and must be replaced in the long-term, but we rarely start with two up top; unless Eddie Howe has a change of system in mind?
FootballTransfers report that Gyokeres is valued at around €75 million and for Newcastle, who may need to sanction a major sale to afford a big-money move for Isak’s international striker partner.
Gyokeres has scored 24 goals in 21 games in all competitions for Sporting this season, including five goals in five Champions League appearances so far.
