Last Wednesday, Liverpool demolished Real Madrid on the pitch but that hasn’t been enough to stop the steady, ongoing thrum of transfer chatter surrounding homegrown star right back Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Set to be out of contract next summer, the 26-year-old playmaker has been rumoured as Madrid’s top target with a defensive rebuild expected on the 2025 horizon for Los Blancos, but an injury to Dani Carvajal has many expecting a January signing at the position.
However, the latest from The Telegraph has Madrid having given up on any hopes of that signing being Alexander-Arnold, with the Spanish giants accepting such a deal would be impossible with Liverpool pushing for domestic and European glory.
Alexander-Arnold is said to still be their top long-term target at the position, but Carvajal’s injury could result in a situation where a second or third choice available now would trump signing their first choice later.
For Liverpool fans looking to hopefully read tea leaves, it might also be taken as a sign that Alexander-Arnold might end up signing a new deal to remain part of the club and new manager Arne Slot’s long-term plans at the position.
Alternately, of course, it could just be rumour churn with little if any basis in what any of the involved parties—be they Madrid, Liverpool, or Alexander-Arnold—are actually doing, and realistically a January sale has never seemed a likely outcome.
