Stephen Warnock was taken aback when told the full fixture list that awaits Everton between now and the end of January.

The Toffees are two points above the Premier League relegation zone after what can best be described as an underwhelming start to the campaign thus far.

The worrying news for Sean Dyche’s side is that they embark on a brutal run of fixtures between now and the end of January.

Sky Sports News presenter Rob Wotton reeled off the fixture list to Warnock live on air [2 December, 12:15pm], to which he simply replied: “Wow.”

As Wotton himself described it, this is a “tough” run ahead of the Toffees. Supporters would no doubt use a stronger word than that.

Wednesday’s (4 December) visit of fellow strugglers Wolves takes on massive importance given what is to come after it – both in the short term and medium term.

There’s the Merseyside derby with a – as painful as it is to say – rampant Liverpool side next weekend, followed by Arsenal at home, Chelsea away, Manchester City away and then Nottingham Forest at home.

The new year then sees Everton face Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Tottenham and an impressive Brighton and Hove Albion side.

Even the most optimistic of Everton fans will realistically only see their side picking up six points from that run, not including the Wolves match.

That contest at Goodison Park therefore takes on so much more importance than it should do at this stage in the campaign.

Lose it, and there is every chance Everton could drop into the bottom three before the year is out. Getting out will then be a major ask.

In other Everton news, the club have made a decision on a loan player ahead of the January transfer window.
