Arne Slot shares what he honestly thinks of Man City’s title chances after Anfield defeat

Manchester City were handed their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat of the season last weekend.

Sunday saw City lose 2-0 to Liverpool at Anfield, resulting in the gap between the two sides stretching to 11 points.

Despite seeing his side lose again, Pep Guardiola predicted City to start winning games following their latest defeat, saying this on the subject after Sunday’s Merseyside clash.

He said: “Call me delusional but I have the feeling that from here, we will start to build back to winning games and confidence.”

With attention now turning to the midweek round of league fixtures – which sees City take on Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium – Arne Slot has shared his thoughts on whether he still sees Guardiola’s side as being in the race for the Premier League title.

Arne Slot discusses City being Liverpool’s title rivals

When asked about his club’s current position in the Premier League and Champions League during his recent press conference, Slot gave this assessment of his side’s current title rivals.

He said: “I think it is important. I think it’s also the culture of this club.

“For us, it’s not that special thing to be on top of the league or on top of the Champions League format, although that does feel special because we’ve never been before. Normally, we have different groups in the Champions League.

This club, this team, these players are used to the fact that they are top of the league or they are competing for every trophy so that helps.

“Then, that experience helps us. They also have that experience that they’ve competed for a long time.

“Then, in the end, they came too short, they couldn’t manage to win it. They also know how to win the league against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and City, because I see those three as our main competitors at the moment.

“They all know that for nine to 10 months, we have to be on top of our game.”

City can’t afford to keep dropping points

Despite not knowing what it’s like to win a Premier League trophy, Jamie Carragher claimed City are in a race for the top four now rather than the title as a result of their dismal run of defeats.

However, with Slot refusing to rule the Blues out of the title race, the main focus for everyone at the Manchester club will be to get themselves back on track and in with the best chance of winning another league trophy in the coming months.

The best way they can do that is by securing a win in front of their home fans against Forest.

And while not in their control until they meet each other again at the Etihad later in the season, City will have to hope Liverpool drop points over the coming weeks, as they did when Forest beat them at Anfield back in September.
